Intelligent electronic devices use a wide variety of electronic assembly components to perform their functions. The most complicated electronic devices, such as the home computer, need a large number of components to function. To securely and efficiently package these components, the components are mounted on printed circuit boards, or PCBs. The PCBs have screen printed copper foil on them that makes the electrical connections between the components once they are properly mounted, so that no hand wiring is necessary. When the number of components becomes quite large, the PCB needed to mount them must become a large flat sheet unless other means of mounting and connection are used. To avoid the electronic device becoming 1 large flat PCB, electronics assemblies are created using the concept of motherboards and daughterboards. Daughterboards are built up to form a functionally unique part of the overall circuitry. The daughterboards are then plugged in to the motherboard at right angles, as if each daughterboard were 1 powerful component. The daughterboards are plugged in to the motherboard at right angles so that the entire electronics assembly grows in three dimensions, making it much more amenable to standard box packaging. Certain key functions that affect all electronics components, such as the computer central processing unit (CPU) must remain on the motherboard, which becomes the central command controller for the entire electronic assembly. Daughterboards are decentralized and are often available in variable options, such as expanded memory capacity. The motherboard, as the central controller, is the single most vital part of the electronic assembly. As technology advances and features change, motherboard designs are constantly updated. Any characterization of the capabilities of the electronic assembly must begin by identifying the motherboard. The identification of the motherboard will then derive down through the daughterboards as the capabilities of the electronic assembly. Use these tips to learn how to identify the motherboard.
